Dressing to Impress: What to Wear for Job Interviews

  • 4th August 2014

Picking an outfit can be stressful at the best of times, but whether we like it or not, we all know that first impressions really do count.

This does not mean that interviews should be treated as a beauty parade; however, you want your appearance to reflect your status and confidence. You’ve made it to the interview, you obviously have the right skills for the job; don’t let your appearance let you down at this stage. The right image is going to be one that helps the employer visualise you as part of their team.

Get a feel of the company you are going to see, check out their “About Us” or “Meet the Team” pages to see if you can establish the right look for the day. You want your new potential employer to be able to picture you in that role.

Here are a few of our top tips for you to keep in mind…

Formal attire is best suited for corporate companies, however, if you’re interviewing for a small creative agency there may be room for more flexibility

Look clean and well groomed; stained and creased shirts are a no go; you want to look like you take pride in yourself and have made an effort

Wear something you feel comfortable in – interviews can be nerve-wracking and the last thing you want is to be uncomfortable in what you’re wearing

Make an effort to ensure your hair is tidy and presentable. A freshly shaved face or styled hair can finish off your look perfectly, showing the interviewers they can be proud to have you represent their brand

Ensure clothes fit well – you don’t want bursting zips or popped buttons, and don’t show too much skin

Ladies, don’t go overboard with the make-up, it puts a barrier up between you and interviewer(s), and it can be a real distraction. A natural look is much more winning!

Picking the right outfit can leave a lasting impression and show off your personality in a positive way, don’t leave picking your outfit to the morning of the interview, have it all ironed and ready the night before. And finally, good luck with the interview!
